Hold the Date:
Marcy Westerling Living Legacy Memorial Celebration
Sunday, August 23rd, 2015
Portland, Oregon

Dear Friends,

Marcy Westerling was a powerful force: a visionary organizer, movement leader, cancer warrior, friend, partner, mentor and an inspiration to many. From the living rooms of small town Oregon to the halls of the medical industrial complex, Marcy organized for her communities and was a true freedom fighter in every sense of the word.  The world is a more just and beautiful place because of Marcy.

The afternoon of Sunday, August 23rd Rural Organizing Project and Marcy’s friends and family invite you to join us for the Marcy Westerling Living Legacy Memorial Celebration.  We will come together, those who knew her well and those who may have only briefly been touched by her, to honor her memory, her life and her legacy.

Please mark the date in your calendar now. More details to follow soon.

With love and gratitude,
Cara & Holly on behalf of Marcy’s friends, family and organizing community

About marcy westerling

I am a long time community organizer with a passion for justice and founded the Rural Organizing Project in 1992. Derailed by a Stage IV Ovarian Cancer diagnosis in spring 2010, I have stayed in treatment since then. I am learning how to embrace livingly dying and hope that by starting a Phase One immunology clinical trial at UPenn in spring of 2013 I will have more time to find the sweet spots of thriving while terminally ill.

  1. To Marcy’s sister Cancer Warriors, if you are unable to join us in person for Marcy’s memorial but would like to share some words about your connection with her, you can email them to me: holly@hollypruettcelebrant.com (we’ll also cull from comments on this site). We join you all in continued amazement and appreciation for all that Marcy accomplished and all whose lives she touched.

  2. I’m so sorry and bummed because I will not be able to attend. PFLAG Central Oregon who Marcy loved is having an BBQ that Sunday and as a board member I need to be there. My heart will be with you folks in Portland!!

  3. I have followed Marcy’s blog from the beginning and have enjoyed knowing her personally, so I don’t think she will mind as much as me that as a delegate I have to attend a SCC Meeting in John Day, Oregon that weekend, but my heart and thoughts will be with everyone celebrating her life and accomplishments.

  4. When Marcy’s emails appeared in my inbox I didn’t ‘delete’ or ‘junk’ or ‘block’ I read and marvelled. I felt more connected to humanity and inspired to live my life well. I miss Marcy and am grateful to have had a chance to know her and share some of her life’s journey.

  5. I will be attending the same Dem meeting as Bill Blank on that day. I know Marcy will want us to carry on the good fight in rural Oregon. She accomplished so much in her life. I am so sorry it was cut short.

  6. I would love to be there but don’t live in the area. Is there an organization that Marcy would have liked donations to be given such the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance or something local?

    Very Respectfully,
    Kathy
