A Little Bit of Coal in My Stocking

Standard

Alas, I have new cancer growth. My doctor approached the results with calm. He reviewed my options. We both agreed on the same approach. Surgery ASAP. I returned to Philly on Friday for more testing and hope to have results before they shut down the week between Christmas and New Years – even having a date set for surgery. I hope to return to the trial before losing my slot at the end of January. All very zippy.

Ideally, just one more blip in the road. (I am tired of blips. This is not the trial norm.)

But time to get off the medical bandwagon and enjoy what is left of 2013 and the holiday season.

I am a long time community organizer with a passion for justice and founded the Rural Organizing Project in 1992. Derailed by a Stage IV Ovarian Cancer diagnosis in spring 2010, I have stayed in treatment since then. I am learning how to embrace livingly dying and hope that by starting a Phase One immunology clinical trial at UPenn in spring of 2013 I will have more time to find the sweet spots of thriving while terminally ill.

  1. Marcy, I am glad you have a good partner in your doctor, and that you are on the same page. All my prayers for you as you enter this next phase of “figuring it out.” I hope you have a peaceful holiday season with your loved ones, especially those of the canine variety.

  5. Marcy, I’m so glad to hear how quickly they are responding at Penn in order to keep you in the trial. Sounds like they are making an “all out effort” to get you in and out of surgery and back into the trial ASAP!!!! Good people at Penn!

You’re right about taking time to enjoy the holidays. You’ve done your part. Now you can relax and let Penn do theirs. Hope your holidays are relaxed and joyful.

  9. Darling girl: Here is my wish for 2014 – no more “blips” for you – A year of blessedly smooth sailing full of moments of pure presence. You know, of course, that Presence does not include any thoughts of the past or of the future. It is only here and now where you are You. Phil and I are both sending you love. And to Mike!

  10. My response to your news:
I want to scream “That’s not fair” and other words which I will not put in print.
